Notes
1. For background on the Solomon Islands see: Judith Bennett, Wealth of the Solomons (Honolulu: University of Hawaii Press, 1987); and Peter Larmour and Sue Tarua, eds., Solomon Islands Politics (Suva: Institute of Pacific Studies, University of the South Pacific, 1983).
2. Further details concerning attempts to develop the Gold Ridge site are to be found in brief articles scattered throughout Pacific Islands Monthly from April 1932 until the latter part of 1941. Also see, John C. Grover, "A Concise History of the Search for Gold in the Solomons," in Transactions of the British Solomon Islands Society, Vol. 2,1955, pp. 1-11; and John C. Grover, "The History of Exploratory and Mining Ventures in the Solomons," in Geological Survey of the British Solomon Islands Memoir, Vol. 1, 1955, pp. 10-15.
3. Quoted in Bennett, Solomons, p. 262. On the Chair and Rule and Maasina Rule movements, see Hugh Laracy, ed., Pacific Protest (Suva: Institute of Pacific Studies, University of the South Pacific, 1983).

7. The atolls are about two hundred kilometers southwest of the larger island of San Cristobal and are themselves over twenty kilometers apart. Rennell atoll is eighty kilometers in length and sixteen kilometers wide, while Bellona is only 11.5 kilometers long and three kilometers wide.
8. The Rennell islanders only became Christians in 1939. Prior to the war the island was visited by anthropologist H.I.Hogbin (see, "A Note on Rennell Island," in Oceania, Vol. 2, No. 2,1931, pp. 174-178). After the war more extensive research was carried out by Danish anthropologists, including Kaj Birket-Smith (see, An Ethnographical Sketch of Rennell Island, Copenhagen: Munksgaard, 1956) and Torben Monberg (see, The Religion of Bellow Island, Copenhagen: National Museum of Denmark, 1966).
9. Information on the Mitsui bauxite mining project on Rennell is provided in Torben Monberg, Mobile in the Trade Wind: The Reaction of the People on Bellona Island towards a Mining Project (Copenhagen: The National Museum of Denmark, 1976); David Ruthven, "Rennell Bauxite," in Peter Larmour, ed., Land in Solomon Islands (Suva: Institute of Pacific Studies, University of the South Pacific, 1979), pp. 94-104; and Judith Bennett, Solomons, pp. 333-34. Also see: "Bauxite, Copper Interest in Rennell," in Pacific Islands Monthly, July 1969, p. 122; Judy Tudor, "The Boom at Last?," in Pacific Islands Monthly, July 1971, p. 51; Toshiro Ueda, "The Solomons Has a New Image for a Younger Generation," in Pacific Islands Monthly, June 1976, pp. 46-7; "Mitsui Abandons Rennell Bauxite," in Pacific Islands Monthly, August 1977, p. 64; and "Mitsui Still Interested in Solomons Bauxite," in Pacific Islands Monthly, September 1977, p. 60.
10. Although the Solomon Islands is relatively underpopulated, rapid population growth over the past few decades has been a major economic problem.
